Why Create A Drama?

Why Create a Drama is an applied theatre process that spans both primary and secondary education and was commissioned by the National Children and Young Persons’ Network. The project involves working with young people from primary and secondary schools within and outwith mainstream education. Using interactive and cognitive behaviour techniques and generating scenarios devised from the young people themselves, the workshops stimulate participants to explore their own actions, reactions and choices. The pilot schools and institutions have been chosen to include a mix of urban and rural environments and to reflect the fullest possible of ethnic and cultural backgrounds now present in Scotland.

The pilot will also generate a resource pack for both the primary and secondary projects, which will accompany the performances. The pack will cover the key issues from the performance and support teachers to carry out follow up work with pupils. The first stage of the project has resulted in the play Gold Stars and Dragon Marks, which toured to primary schools in Scotland in June 2009.

The next stage will involve a workshop leader and writer working with five secondary schools across Scotland over a five-week period. At the end of this period the workshop leader, writer and a team of four actors will come together to devise a new piece of theatre based on the pupils’ input and experiences. This production will be touring secondary schools across Scotland from Monday 19th October until Friday 30th October. If you would like to book a free performance, contact us
